What is the meaning of a Proverbs 31 woman? This woman seems like an ideal woman, a standard that many women want to measure up to and many men desire their wives to attain.
I must be honest I don’t feel a Proverbs 31 woman. Why you may ask? It seems to me like a standard of perfection that I cannot attain. I feel like I’m an imperfect woman that God is working on and in no way am I that Proverbs 31 woman.
Aspiring to be a Proverbs 31 woman is great but we should never idolize a standard of perfection. We should keep in mind that we are all works in progress. God is continually working on us to become who he wants us to be.
But when I think of someone who is a Proverbs 31 woman, I think of my mother. Two years ago she passed away and at her funeral service this was the passage my sisters and I read. She seemed to embody the majority of these characteristics. In my mind, she was the definition of Proverbs 31 woman. She loved and cared for her family. She unselfishly placed their needs above hers.
As a ministers wife, she genuinely cared for the people of her congregation. I listened to stories and stories of the many lives she had influenced. She was always ready to listen to their problems and offer kind words and solutions.
She was an evangelist of the gospel. Not only did she minister to her local congregation, she went wherever the opportunity presented itself to minister the gospel. She was passionate about spreading the word of God.
As much as we honor her as a Proverbs 31 woman, I doubt that was what she set out to be. Her mission was simply to live according to the word of God and funny enough, by doing so she became the embodiment of the Proverbs 31 woman.
She was not perfect and she knew this but she desired to be a woman after God’s own heart. She was in tune with the Holy Spirit and she knew he was always working to make her a better version of her self.
What this tells me about those who desire to be the Proverbs 31 woman is, live a life of obedience to the word of God and the rest will fall into place. Forget about a checklist of to do’s that makes one the perfect Proverbs 31 woman. The important lesson of Proverbs 31 is a woman whose heart is surrendered to the will of God.
As much as she didn’t set out to be this Proverbs 31 woman, at the end of her journey on earth, her children did rise and call her blessed.
