Why You Should Let Your Light Shine

Recently when Jaguar wanted to launch its new F-PACE suv, it chose to do so on the tallest structure in the world, the Burj Khalifa. The Burj Khalifa has the largest LED illuminated building exterior in the world.

Jaguar put on a three minute LED light show on this building to showcase their new product, because they wanted the world to know about how good they thought their product was.  They weren’t about to hide, they wanted their product to be showcased boldly around the world.

As children of God, we have a light that we need to let shine. Matthew 5, tell us that “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a lampstand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven (Matthew 5: 15&16 NIV)

Why We Do Not Let Our Light Shine

Fear

In a world that is  increasingly unwelcome to things of God, sometime we do not want anyone to know that we have the ‘light’. We do not want to lose friendships and connections. We do not want to be thought of as being weird.

Letting our light shine means that we will have to put ourselves out front to be scrutinized and for many of us, especially those of us who prefer to shun the limelight, this can be quite tricky.

3

This cannot be how we operate though, because scripture tell us that if we  are afraid to acknowledge Christ here on earth, then he will not acknowledge us before God (Matt. 10: 32&33). Fear of what the world thinks must not cause us to hide our light because it is too valuable.

Know How

Some of us have the desire to let our light shine, but we have no idea how to. We might be concerned that we do not know enough about what to share with others. It is the Holy Spirit, however, that empowers us to do God’s work.

R.A. Torrey says, “It is only when the Holy Spirit Himself takes the written Word, or takes the testimony of our fellow man, and interprets it directly to our hearts that we really come to see and know Jesus as He is”. R.A. Torrey: the Person and Work of the Holy Spirit.

It is not in our strength, but in the strength of the Holy Spirit that we influence the world for Christ.

Other Interest

Maybe letting your light shine might take you on a different path than you are now pursuing. You might have your well laid plans and you are not interested in them being disrupted.

Actually, you might be thinking can’t God just work himself into what I am now doing? But our most important goal should be allowing God’s will to be reflected in our lives.

Why we need to let our light shine

  • We have something that the world needs. Jesus is the light of the world and the light of our lives. We know what a difference it makes when he comes into our lives, therefore we need to share this with others.
  • We might be the only option someone has to be exposed to the light.
  • God gets the glory when we let our light shine.
  • This is what Jesus asks of us. We are asked to share our faith with others. That is an expectation of the christian journey.

  1. I used to be a very shy person, but God chose to use me anyway. I’ve learned to share the light in various ways. Sometimes, I talk about my life experiences to people who are going through the same things, or offer advice from a Godly point of view, intervene in a conversation with what the Bible say, or just offer someone a Bible, a christian book, a Christian journal etc. It depends on the situation at hand and who I’ve got to talk to.
I once offered a Christian book to my boss and then saw how it literally changed his opinion about Christianity.
Thanks for giving me this opportunity to share my experiences.

  2. This is so true! As Children of God, we are atmosphere changers, and we should be able to shift atmospheres wherever we go, and also not only that; whenever we step into a room, others should be able to know that there is something different about us that sets us apart from everyone else in the room, even if we never open our mouths because of “who and what” is on the inside of us should cause us to shine so bright on the outside, and it should let others know the real work that has taken place on the inside; where others can truly see God working and dwelling, and not the person themselves.

I love to give an example about President Barack Obama: If he steps into a room, and never says a word; all because of who he is, people will know him and should immediately give him the respect that is due to him.
